Ingredients

  • ½ cup rolled oats old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup water or milk or half & half
  • Pinch of salt don’t skip this
  • Optional toppings see variations below

Rolled oats give the best balance of texture and nutrition

Quick oats cook faster but are softer

Steel-cut oats require a different method (covered later)

Instructions

  • Choose Your Liquid

Use water for a clean, neutral base or milk for creamier oatmeal. Plant milks like almond or oat milk work just as well.
    Ratio:½ cup oats : 1 cup liquid
  • Bring to a Gentle Simmer

Add oats, liquid, and salt to a saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat—not a rolling boil.
  • Cook Slowly

Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally. The oats should soften and absorb most of the liquid.
Tip: Stirring occasionally prevents sticking and helps release starch for a creamier texture.
  • Rest Before Serving

Remove from heat and let the oatmeal sit for 1 minute. This final rest thickens the texture naturally.
  • Customize & Serve

Add toppings, sweeteners, or spices of choice. Serve warm.
